Seven Years

 | August 22, 2011 7:16 pm

Each year, as August 23rd grows near, I begin to feel that familiar ache, that sick feeling, knowing there is no turning back.   My friends and co-workers notice the change in me.  Quiet, withdrawn, distracted… It is true; I just want to be left to myself.

I have learned to face these emotions head on. I have had to accept this grief will be a part of me for the rest of my life.  I have had to accept your death. I cannot run from it. I cannot ignore it. That raw aching feeling will always or at least so far, lie just below the surface.

Tomorrow you will have been in Heaven for seven years Ben.  Tomorrow my broken heart will still mourn for you.  My minds eye will remember every detail in your handsome face.  I will remember the sound of your laughter; all of the reasons your brothers and I love you and miss you so much.

I wanted to write something special to you.  Something to also give me comfort as I  struggle to face this day yet again.  They say we do not remember days, we remember moments.  For you, there are so many!  I tend too sift through my memories more during this time of year; making sure each is carefully preserved, nothing forgotten.

The other day a song came to mind (one of your favorites) about life in heaven.  “Big House” by Audio Adrenline.  It reminded me of a conversation you and I had after listening to that song.  You asked me what I thought heaven would be like. I said, I thought we would be able to do the things we loved there just as we had here, in this place.  I remember you asked if I thought they would play football in heaven. Oh how you loved the game!

This reminded me of a day we were at the ball park watching Adam play T-ball.  One of the coaches saw you and asked your name.  The two of you spoke for a few moments, he asked your age and you told him you were 12 years old.  His eyes grew wide and he laughed a hardy laugh and clapped you on the shoulder.  “Lord son! You’re a big 12!” he said.  “Yes sir, a big 12! You’re gonna make a fine athlete one day that’s for sure.”

You did make a fine athlete Ben.  You were taller and stronger than most your age.  You always stood out in a crowd or should I say stood above it.  One of your friends wrote to me and she said it best.  Amy said “Ben was one of the quiet ones.  He was so much bigger than the rest of us but, he never used his size to hurt or intimidate anyone.  He had a gentle spirit. He was a good person.”

You are a gentle spirit Ben.  I feel you still.  You are in my heart, in my mind. You are in my life!

So as tomorrow grows near, I will still feel that familiar ache… It is because I love you that I still hurt.  It is because I miss you that I still grieve.  I am your mother and you are my son.

I do know one day, I will see you again. One day you will be there to guide me on my journey home.  One day our family will be together. Perhaps on that day, we will all go outside and I will watch you guys play football. Football in Heaven, just like you always said.

I love you…

FFSF Past, Present and Future

 | October 30, 2010 4:33 am

The FFSF was created in loving memory of FF/EMT Benjamin Matthew Lang, a son, brother, co-worker and friend.  As I write this update, I can still hear the sound of his voice, of his laughter. I can still hear “I love you Mom.”  In my mind’s eye, I can see his golden curls shimmering in the sunlight as a little boy.  I can see him proudly accepting his diploma at his High School Graduation.  I can see how handsome he was in his uniform.

My sense of pride has never faded.  My love is as intense today as it was on the day of his birth.  My son…he was my son.

The days and weeks that followed his death are a blur.  Understandably, I was in such shock, my grief so consuming, I cannot tell you who I spoke with, who visited, what was said.  To me the simplest tasks for those few weeks were so daunting and draining.  But, for the love of my family and friends I could not have made it through.  For you see, I could not have stood on my own, not for those few weeks.

The foundation comes from a time in one’s life that another cannot even comprehend unless their own experience sets them on the same path, my path.  My loss was the Fallen Firefighter Survivors Foundations beginnings.

I am reluctant to publish this draft as it is so personal.  It is important for you to know however, speaking to you as a survivor; I know firsthand the pain and anguish a family goes through following the sudden tragedy of a Line of Duty Death.

The FFSF World’s Largest Poker Run in 2009 and 2010 allowed us to create, organize and establish the fundamentals by which we are presently in operation.  The FFSF has now joined in partnership with the Florida State Fire College, we became a recognized resource in the State of Florida by the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Florida Fire Chiefs Association just to name a few.

When we sent out our first gift, I knew deep in my heart we were making a difference. Through the FFSF we can reach out to others that are in desperate need.   What better way to honor Benjamin than to assist the families of those that like him had made the ultimate sacrifice?  To give one’s life for the sake of another, this is a testament to the true meaning of hero.

American Firefighters are brave men and women who live and work in every city, in every community of this country.  It is our goal, in the wake of tragedy, to become a resource, to extend the hand of friendship. Our purpose is simple; the FFSF will directly assist survivor families by offering funds to pay for unforeseen expenses during the period immediately following a Line of Duty Death.

As we move forward in our mission we can only look to others for support.  We will channel that goodwill to offer assistance at a time when it is needed most. We are currently in the planning stages of Florida’s 1st Annual Fire Fest 2011 as well as the next FFSF World’s Largest Poker Run.  We are in hopes the citizens our Firefighters bravely serve will join us in supporting our efforts.

Please feel free to browse our website.  You may contact us at anytime through our contact page or by email ffsfusa@msn.com.

Please accept our heartfelt gratitude for being a part the Fallen Firefighter Survivors Foundations past, present and future, for keeping dreams alive and for honoring our fallen heroes.

Star and Shield Win-Win Charity Campaign

 | 4:15 pm

We would like to thank Allen Durham, CEO and all of the members of Star & Shield Insurance Exchange for your generosity and support.   A total of $3475.00 was raised during the charity campaign. From January through September 30th the Fallen Firefighter Survivors Foundation was selected by callers, 695 times.  Mr. Durham announced the campaign would continue through the end of this year.

Here’s how it works…

There is no obligation for an eligible caller to purchase in order for the FFSF to receive the $5 per quote.  The caller must be eligible to join Star & Shield (see www.starandshield.com for eligibility information) and request a quote.  The caller will be asked to pick from a select list of charities, if the caller chooses the FFSF, then the FFSF will receive a $5 donation from Star & Shield Insurance Exchange (limit one donation per household).  Star & Shield has over 3,000 members now throughout the state of Florida and the awareness of the company continues to build as more and more members of the Fire Rescue/EMS and Law Enforcement/Corrections community switch to an insurance company that is exclusively for them and owned by its members (policyholders)!

Fallen Heroes Rememberance Ride 9/11/2010

We would like to thank Becki Hynson and the rest of the gang at MST for a great event.  We were honored to be there.

I must admit I have struggled all evening with this post.  My words cannot express the profound sadness I feel for the families of the victims of that terrible day.  The strength and resolve and selfless acts of bravery shown that day will be forever  etched on my heart.

We were proud to stand with American’s all across this nation in rememberance of the brave men and women of the 9/11/01 tragedy.

We will never forget!

Lord, take me where You want me to go,
let me meet who You want me to meet,
tell me what You want me to say,
and keep me out of Your way.

Good News Keeps Rolling In

 | August 27, 2010 9:58 pm

I wanted to take a moment and share some of our current projects with everyone.

The Nat’l Fallen Firefighter Foundation has invited FFSF to charter a consortium along with several others.  It is very early in the planning stages. However, we are in hopes through this opportunity we will gain not only added validity, we will be able to assist each other in our similar purpose.

We are currently involved in a charity campaign with Star and Shield Insurance.  See previous Blog entry.

We are also working with the very talented author, Mr. Kurt Kamm.  For a donation you will receive a signed copy of his award winning novels.  Click here for more details

Just today we were contacted by some folks in Tennessee….(it’s a secret)  details coming soon.  : )

These are just a few of the many wonderful things that are in store for us.  This arduous road has been long and at times it seems almost unachievable.  We can do this however, by God’s grace I am convinced we can!  Our purpose is quite simple… reaching out and lending a hand at time when it is needed most.  We have met so many amazing people along the way, become involved with so many amiable organizations.  We can never thank them enough, we can however “continue the path”.  As always, together we can and will make a difference.
